World Snooker Championship to allow spectators amid COVID-19

The upcoming World Snooker Championship to be held in Sheffield will become one of the pilot events which allow the attendance of spectators, the organisers have confirmed. Last Friday, the British government announced that a small number of sporting events will be used to pilot the safe return of spectators through late July and early August amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Fans could return to stadiums in England in October if the pilot events go well. The World Snooker Championship to be held from July 31 to August 16 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield will welcome a reduced crowd every session throughout the tournament, reports Xinhua news agency. Bangladesh Covid-19 cases exceed 200,000

Bangladesh reported 2,709 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday, taking the total to exceed 200,000, with nearly 2,600 deaths. "A total of 2,709 fresh Covid-19 cases were reported in the last 24 hours, taking the nationwide tally to 202,066," a senior Health Ministry official, Nasima Sultana, said in a briefing, Xinhua reported. According to the official, 10,923 samples were tested in the last 24 hours in labs across the country. She said that "34 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh and total fatalities stood at 2,581". According to the official, the Covid-19 fatality rate in Bangladesh is now 1.28 per cent. Also she said that the current recovery rate is 54.49 per cent in the country. Coronavirus restrictions are being relaxed again in England under a plan outlined by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Friday. Johnson said that he is "hoping for the best and planning for the worst", with current changes in rules bringing a "significant return to normality" by Christmas. The Prime Minister explained during a news conference at Downing Street that the plan "remains conditional" on the UK pulling together to win its "long fight" against the virus. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will all make their own decisions on when COVID-19 restrictions should end or be changed, the BBC reported. Johnson said that social distancing will stay in place for now, but may be scrapped from as early as November - saying family and friends could potentially hug again by Christmas.   Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited the flood-hit Kumamoto prefecture to assess the devastation and pledged the central government's support to local municipalities. After arriving at Kagoshima Airport on an Air Self-Defense Force (SDF) transport plane on Monday, Abe visited a nursing home where 14 residents were killed after the Kuma River breached its banks, reports Xinhua news agency. Abe also met Kumamoto Governor Ikuo Kabashima. At least 64 people were killed in Kumamoto, with 14 other prefectures also being inundated amid torrential rain which led to 105 rivers flooding, while 27 prefectures saw 316 landslides. The world-famous Hagia Sophia museum in Istanbul - originally founded as a cathedral - has been turned back into a mosque. Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the decision after a court annulled the site's museum status, the BBC reported on Friday. Built 1,500 years ago as an Orthodox Christian cathedral, Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest in 1453. In 1934 it became a museum and is now a Unesco World Heritage site. Islamists in Turkey long called for it to be converted to a mosque but secular opposition members opposed the move. The proposal prompted criticism from religious and political leaders worldwide. Defending the decision, Erdogan stressed that the country had exercised its sovereign right in converting it back to a mosque.  Authorities in the Australian city of Melbourne on Sunday confined people living in nine housing estate tower blocks due to a sudden spike in the number of coronavirus cases. The city is putting "stage three" restrictions on 12 suburbs, reports the BBC. People there will only be able to leave the house for four reasons: work or education, exercise, medical care or care-giving, and shopping for supplies. But the nine tower blocks in Flemington and North Melbourne face a "hard lockdown". The 3,000 or so residents of the blocks are being told not to leave their homes for any reason for at least five days. At least 23 cases of infection were found on two estates in recent days.
